Welcome to We Become Fit – where you come to embrace and enhance your fitness journey. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to elevate your existing routine, the goal is to arm you with practical tips, strategies, and a dose of motivation. We strive for fitness inside and out and take a holistic approach to improving your quality of life.
Setting goals is the first step in your fitness journey. But it’s crucial these goals are realistic and tailored to your personal needs. Whether it’s running a 5K, mastering a new yoga pose, or simply incorporating daily walks, your goals should inspire and guide you. Set small, achievable milestones and celebrate them. At the moment, my goal is to incorporate movement into my everyday routine – even if it’s only 15 minutes a day. It helps to track progress someway, whether that be through an app or within a journal. And when you hit a slump (because we all do) remind yourself why you started. It’s about progress, not perfection.
Listen to your body and adjust accordingly to avoid burnout and injury. If something feels off, it’s better to rest or seek professional advice. Proper form and technique are more important than lifting heavier weights or pushing through pain.
Remember, you can’t get fit by exercising alone. As the popular saying goes, “abs are made in the kitchen not the gym.” Nutrition is your fuel. I used to workout for more than an hour each day, but eat junk and wonder why I wasn’t seeing the results I desired. While there are so many competing ideas about effective, healthy diets, I’ve boiled good nutrition down to two main tenets:
- Minimize consumption of processed foods. Avoid processed sugars and consume whole fruits, vegetables and proteins.
- Maximize consumption of quality protein and aim for 1 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight. This is not easy. See my post on The Best Sources of Unprocessed Protein.
Remember, every step forward is progress, and every effort counts. As with most things in life, small, incremental changes over time will deliver remarkable results. As written by internationally best selling author James Clear in his book Atomic Habits, all you need to do is strive to become 1% better everyday.
