Create a Consistent Fitness Routine in 3 Easy Steps

Okay, so you’re ready to jump start your 2025 fitness goals now, but you’re finding it a little challenging to stick to a routine. The key to staying consistent is having a routine that fits your lifestyle, not the other way around. It’s important to be realistic about what you can commit to. A perfect plan is useless if it’s not sustainable, so start by mapping out a routine that’s adaptable to your schedule.

  1. Short but effective workouts: If your time is limited, opt for shorter workouts. I’m a big fan of exercise snacks—quick, intense bursts of activity that can be done in 5-15 minutes. These mini-workouts allow you to stay consistent even on your busiest days.   2. Prioritize quality over quantity: Focus on exercises that give you the most bang for your buck, like strength training circuits or HIIT. A 20-minute HIIT session can be just as effective as an hour-long moderate workout when it comes to building muscle and burning fat. If you only have time for a quick workout, I would focus on strength training. Building muscle boosts metabolism and burn fat, if you’re trying to lose weight. It also helps with bone density and enhances strength and functionality
  3. Mix it up: If you’ve been focusing heavily on cardio, please, please, please start strength training or practicing yoga to keep your routine exciting and well-rounded. This is particularly important for those of us over 40, when it becomes more difficult to build muscle. Honestly, I wish I started strength training sooner, but it’s never too late!

The goal is to find joy in movement, so if something isn’t working for you, switch it up! Maybe that means swapping your usual morning workout for an evening routine, signing up for a race, challenge with friends or perhaps trying something new like dance classes or Pilates. Keep it fresh, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it.
